Make Your Own: Massage Candle

Make Your Own: Massage Candle

Amanda Furbee

Creating candles is a simple and fun way to bring light and scents into your space. Many of the candles on the market are polluted with unnatural scents and harmful gassing agents that can pollute our airways without us even knowing. Another benefit of making your own candles is you get to customize your own scent. For folks that are sensitive to unnatural scents, you can still enjoy candles in a cleaner more simple way.

There are many waxes that you can to make your candle base. Soy wax and Beeswax are my 2 favorite waxes to work with. Soy wax is a much softer wax than beeswax , but both of these have a very clean burn and last a lot longer than some synthetic waxes. Your wick is also important to consider. May top choice is to use a wooden wick. They burn nice and slow and are a great alternative to a wax or cotton wick. You may also want to experiment with other twigs and such.

For this candle recipe we are adding a little extra flair for the season of Love and making a nourishing and sexy massage candle. You can heat it up and pour a little warm wax into your hands for a nice massage with this oil. Everything in here is great for the skin and soft to the touch. The wax is also soft enough that you can take a bit out before lighting and use it as a thicker cream. To Make Your Own: Massage Candle

  • Begin by heating up a double boiler. If you do not have a double boiler you can take two pans that stack together well and fill up the bottom one with water.
  • Bring the double boiler to a simmer.
  • Then add your soy wax, cocoa butter and shea butter to the top of the double boiler. Let it melt.
  • Once that melts add your avocado oil. Stir all the melted ingredients together.
  • While everything is melting get your containers and wicks ready to go. Adding a little glue dot to the bottom of your wick can help it stay in place better. Or you can wait to add the wick in till you pour your wax.
  • Having a candy thermometer can be helpful. You want to lower the temperature down just a bit so that it is around 80 to 90 degrees before adding your essential oil blend.
  • Once you get the cooled off temperature you can add the essential oil blend to the double boiler.
  • Be ready to start pouring into your containers.
  • Add your wicks (if you haven’t already). The pencils and chopsticks are great to hold the wicks in the center of your container if you can’t get it to do it on its own. Tie the rubber band around the pencils/chopsticks to hold together.
  • Let them cool. Do not touch them until they harden. That can take a good few hours with this blend, because the materials are soft. You can add them to the fridge if you need to speed up the process.
  • After they are hardened, label them and light them up.
