Giving Back with Herbalist Amanda Furbee

Tis the season to be Jolly! At The Herb Shoppe we are grateful for you! It is truly a blessing to get to do this work and provide a healing service to the community. Our goal at THS has always been to create a safe space and to honor the process of each person as they enter our doors and share their healing process with us.

This year we dedicate the Holiday season to giving back! We have chosen 3 organizations to help support from the Friday after Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve. For all sales over a $30 we will donate $1 and for all sales over $100 we will donate $5 to the organization you choose.

As a collection decision we decided on these 3 organizations this year:

  1. United Plant Savers-This wonderful organization was created by some of the founders of Western Herbalism such as Rosemary Gladstar.

Their mission states: United Plant Savers’ mission is to protect native medicinal plants of the United States and Canada and their native habitat while ensuring an abundant renewable supply of medicinal plants for generations to come.

  1. Peoples Health Clinic Portland (PHCP)- This organization is a local group of folks that help to provide herbal services to folks in need. From a wellness clinic with Acupuncture, Massage and Herbal consultations these folks are out helping people who are in dire need!

Their mission states: We are a free health clinic serving those of us living at the crossroads of economic injustice and other systemic oppressions.

  1. Food By Design- A wonderful local organization helping to put the power of knowledge and nutrition into the hands of those in need.

Their mission states: Our vision is to redefine our current theory of systems and begin developing a new emerging system, a system that operates through co-operation, integrity, beauty, and loving kindness. One that creates the conditions for all the Portland residences to achieve their greatest potential regardless of age, sexual orientation, color or disability. These conditions provide access to mental health, wellness, jobs, fresh food and housing.

We create healthy and sustainable communities by mentoring houseless people in pursuit of self-sufficiency through our urban farm job training program. Participants in our three-month program receive technical training in growing food, nutrition education, career coaching, and other leadership development opportunities.  Ultimately, we believe every neighborhood should have a system that thrives: food+ jobs=Economic justice for all!

Amanda Furbee

Amanda’s interest in herbalism began at an early age but it wouldn’t be until 2010, when she moved to the Pacific Northwest, that her relationship with medicinal plants blossomed. The move from the east coast to the west coast would be more than a change of scenery, it brought her closer towards the wonderful world of herbalism. Ambitious to start learning she found a golden opportunity working at Portland’s first all organic herbal supplier, The Herb Shoppe. Her experience was even more fulfilling than she had hoped for, feeling invigorated Amanda knew this was a step in the right direction.
