As the summer begins to wind down, the reality of kids going back to school is quickly approaching in parent’s minds. It's almost time to enroll in class, pick up school supplies and start preparing your child for the coming year. Keeping your child well throughout the year is always challenging! Every day your child is exposed to thousands of unwanted germs. They are coming in from all directions- like an asteroid storm hurtling through space towards your child! Contrary to popular belief however, I do not believe that exposure to germs is a bad thing. It is okay and healthy for your child to get dirty and to be exposed to germs. The more exposure to a germ the more your body can recognize this as a normal agent in your atmosphere and cultivate it's immune response in accordance. With that being said being sanitary is still a great preventative, listen to your Mama and wash your hands! There are many ways you can help your child to stay well in the school season. Here are some of my favorites: 1. Boost your child’s immune system now! a. Provide proper nutrition. b. Pack your child’s diet with vitamins A, C, E and essential fatty acids like Flaxseed or fish oil. c. Avoid sugar- it exhausts and over stimulates the body as it tries desperately to digest it. This causes your child’s immune system to be run down. d. Add Garlic to your foods! Garlic’s anti-bacterial properties are remarkable. e. Herbal Syrups, Tinctures, Teas and Capsules are a perfect way to boost your child’s immune system. Give them a little pep in their step with a blend of these immune boosting herbs: Elderberry, Astragalus, Rosehips, Echinacea and Orange Peel. 2. Breastfeeding a. If you are actively breastfeeding you are naturally providing your baby with a strong immune system and preventing your baby against sickness. b. Drinking herbal teas that boost your immune system will also boost the budding immune system of your baby. What a beautiful example that what you put in your body is what you get out of it! 3. Environment: Be aware of what you surround yourself with. I am not saying you need to go get rid of everything you have going on in your home, but next time you run out of multi-purpose cleaner, consider your other (cheaper and easier) options. Did you know its super easy and affordable to make you own natural cleaning supplies? You probably have most of the ingredients at your house already. Check out these recipes from Wellness Mama here: http://wellnessmama.com/361/natural-cleaning-recipes/ 4. Emotional Well-being a. Stress will wear the body down faster than anything else. As adults we have all experienced that! Keep your babies stress free, and help yourself destress too while you're at it! b. Regulating sleep and having a set bed time with your children, allows you to rest and them to rebuild consistently. c. Children's Wind Down Tea is a great solution if you find your little one needs a little relaxing. d. Napping encourages the importance of relaxing and also sets up the balance and restorative properties of meditation for the future. Meditation has been shown to improve focus in school, provide better grades and help calm down anxious or hyperactive kids! Napping is a precursor to the essential quiet time necessary to build this skill. To set up an herbal consultation with me please email: info@theherbshoppepharmacy.com
