As I grow with my connection to the Elements my understanding broadens and my consciousness shifts. I continually am amazed at the different ways that learning and listening, watching and observing nature is one of the biggest ways that we learn to reconnect to ourselves, our communities and what is vitally important to opening our eyes and becoming aware. In this series of writings we will go through all 4 elements and what I have observed and found helpful as guidance.

Water. What is water? The rhythm of the earth, our wombs, the moon, our emotions. Everything rides the wave of water. It falls from the sky as a soft pitter-patter or as hard as a rock. Water is a shape-shifter. It comes in many forms, liquid, snow, hail. Similar to that are our emotions. We ebb and flow with the tides. We cycle with the moon that cycles with the water. Water can be soothing and healing and also turbulent and treacherous. It can be fresh spring water or salty. There are certain animals that can only breath in water and some that can only breath under water with help. Our human bodies are up to 75% water and we cannot be without it for long. We know less about our oceans than we do about our solar system. How vastly different each water molecule can be! How can one element have so many stories to tell?

In the body, what is water? Our bodies are made up of 60-75% water. We cry tears of water that cleanse our bodies. We sweat out of our pores as our body’s natural way of cooling the body off from over heating. We cannot survive very long with out water to replenish our thirst and it is necessary to shed excessive water from the body as waste. When the body has too much water in the system it can swell and cause many issues that are often related to the kidneys. The kidneys are the body’s water filtration system. It is always a good thing to nourish and replenish the kidneys.

In Dr. Masaru Emoto’s book, Hidden Messages in Water, he goes into great detail on influence of our words and emotions in water can have a lasting and positive effect on the health of all beings. When we can embrace the power of our words and the impact they have on all things, including the molecules of water, we move towards greater connection and a more loving story of life.

In Astrology each sign is related to an element. West is the direction associated with Water. We have three zodiac signs of each element. Embracing water is Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. All 3 zodiacs are deeply emotional and sensitive signs that are ruled by water. They are known for their intuition perspectives and insight. Water signs like to live in dream space and nurture creativity. Because these signs feel so much they tend to be sympathetic to others needs and hold great amounts of space for those in need. Just like in a womb, water signs tend to hold you when you need it most.

Animals that are associated with water can take, as many shapes as water itself, Swans and Blue Herons although they are birds are associated with water. Frogs, alligator and turtles those gifted little beauties, can live on land and also in the water. In the water we have Salmon, Whales and Dolphins, Crab and Lobster, Coral, Starfish, and so many more. The variety of beings that live in the water is as diverse as all the stars in the sky.

Animal medicine has been used for centuries with our ancestors as tools for guidance. Watch and learn from animals that have swam through the depths of our oceans, swam up stream in mother natures greatest rivers and build their homes in and out of the water. Their wisdom is so profound, their natural instincts are genuinely passed on to us as a lesson. How we learn from them is by observing their message by their natural actions. The Medicine Cards, written by Jamie Sams & David Carson, go into old fables and tales of animals that have been observed from ancient cultures all over the world. I have found this set of oracle cards to be an excellent tool for guidance and understanding. A few of the animals of water that have swam beside me in the depths of my own emotions and served me well as guides:

-Whale, Record Keeper, Whale medicine teaches us to use the sounds and frequencies that balance our emotional bodies and heal our physical form. –Animal medicine

-Dolphin, Manna, Dolphin speaks to us of the breath of life. Imitate Dolphin and ride the waves of laughter, spreading joy in the world. –Animal medicine

-Alligator, Integration, The powerful gift of Alligator medicine is to fully appreciate and integrate all that life offers. –Animal medicine

-Salmon, Wisdom/Inner Knowing, Salmon is the sacred keeper of wisdom and inner knowing who, despite strong river currents, will always return to the place of its creation. Salmon may be telling you to trust your gut feeling and inner knowing at this time. Salmon teaches you to see every bend in the river as a new adventure, with a lesson you need to learn in order to grow. –Animal medicine

-Swan, Grace. Swan medicine teaches us to be at one with the planes of consciousness, and to trust in Great Spirits protection. –Animal medicine

-Frog, Cleansing. Frog sings the songs that bring the rain and make the road more bearable. Frog teaches us to honor our tears: for they cleanse the soul. –Animal medicine

There are many other animals that are totems of water. If you feel one calling you watch it and learn. It may be sending you a message or guidance tool. As with all symbols and patterns in life, they are messages to pay attention to.

In a metaphysical sense, water is here to help us with the ebbs and flows of life. It can help take away sadness and grief and soothe the soul like a mothers embrace. Water is the element that is associated with intuition, emotions and unconsciousness. It can be used as a guide by being close to a body of water; whether that is a tea cup, your bathtub, or the ocean. When life feels intense, unclear, and emotional invite in water to cleanse, soothe and heal your wounds.

In sharing my connection to water, I hope that you find guidance with your own path on reconnecting with nature and yourself. May it be a tool that guides you when you are unsure. May you always know that your intuition and connections to spirit are by your side always.
