Lavender Flower Essence with Herbalist Amanda Furbee

In 2020, I would like to explore flower essences with you. This very gentle, but powerful medicine is taken in small doses, otherwise known as micro-dosing. Each month we will take a deeper look at one plant and how it might be beneficial to you. The beauty of flower essence is that it works by enhancing and working with the energetic body. Flower essences are subtle energetic medicine to help and shift whatever energy you are working on, by embracing the spirit of each individual plant. I know that I am constantly trying to evolve and breakdown the layers of life to be a more well-rounded and grounded person. At times, the older we become, the muddier it gets to try and remember the core essence of our beings. Our emotions often rule our whole life. Whether or not we want to admit it, our mood can make or break a day or moment in time. Potently fragrant Lavender will grab your nose and beg you to smell it! There are 45 species and 450 varieties of Lavender that we know of. All of them have a slight variation in the volatile oils that are used to soothe and relax us. Lavender is one of the most commonly used fragrances that we see in all kinds of products from skin care to hair care and home fragrances. Adding Lavender to your foods can also be a delicious surprise. I love using it in my herbal salad dressings and baking shortbread cookies with Lavender. Most of my life I have been told that I have so much energy, and that I was wound-up! Little did I know as a child that this would be the fuel that kept me going with my passion of herbalism and being a business owner. It is a special gift for any of us that are too “wound-up” have been given. However, learning to harness this gift came with lots of life lessons. Lavender in flower essence form can be extremely helpful to calm and soothe the soul. I love working with Lavender flower essence to keep me grounded and calm in times when my energy feels a bit too dispersed. In this day and age, we are all looking for a bit of grounding and stability; we are holding onto what our World used to look and feel like. With so much uncertainty surrounding us, now is the perfect time to look to nature for the guidance we need. July is Lavender season here in the PNW. If you have some growing in your yard or have access to some from a local farm I encourage you to explore Lavender as plant ally. Lavender can be helpful in these situations:
  • Calming
  • Soothing upset or irritability
  • Grounding
  • Channeling the monkey mind
  • Easing the “wound-up”
  • Relief to head, neck and shoulders
FES Repertory writes of lavender, “Lavender first works to sedate and soothe such persons: at a deeper level, it teaches one how to moderate and regulate one’s spiritual-psychic energy. In this way the soul learns to use its highly sensitive capacities in balance with the physical needs of the body." I love this, because like many of us when we are absorbing too many energies from our surroundings, it can feel like anxiety, stress and we need a little help to channel the energy that comes our way.
